WEST FRESNO DEMOCRATIC CLUB
7-16-2016 MEMBERSHIP MEETING
1035 ‘U STREET, FRESNO, CA 93721

Present: Mikki Addison, Charles Taylor, Richard Graham, Carole Laval, Sharlyn Woody, Michael Rhodes, Emilio Huerta.

Call to order: 3:45 p.m.

Introductions of Officers, Members, and Guests.

No June meeting so that Club could participate in Juneteenth celebration.

President’s Report (Mikki A): Report on Juneteenth and other items. The parade was canceled but there were booths and other activities at Gaston Middle School. She also spoke about the Black Lives Matters march, which she participated in.

Treasurer’s Report (Carole L): As of 6-30-2016, $255.13 balance in savings account and $175.86 balance in checking account.

Guest Speaker: Michael Rhodes, author of ‘Dispatches from the War Zone’ read passages from his book and spoke about the homeless issue in Fresno. He mentioned that he had previously published a book entitled ‘Wild Edibles of Fresno County.’

Emilio Huerta, Democratic candidate for Congressional District 21, spoke about his race and other matters.

Announcements:
Democratic club presidents will meet at the headquarters office on Monday, July 18, at 6:30.
NWPC Fresno will hold its annual Equality Day fundraiser on Thursday, August 25. This is a lunch event at which Senator Barbara Boxer and former California Superintendant of Schools, Delaine Eastin with be the keynote speakers. Former Fresno Mayor Karen Humphrey will be MC for the luncheon. Tickets are $75.

Meeting adjourned 5:30 pm. Next membership meeting is August 20, 2016.

CALL TO ORDER: 3:43 PM

MEMBERSHIP MEETING QUORUM IS 8. NO QUORUM. UNABLE TO APPROVE MINUTES AND OTHER REPORTS.

SELF INTRODUCTIONS.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (MIKKI A): DAUGHTER DEPLOYED UNTIL FEBRUARY. SPOKE ABOUT BLACK LIVES MATTERS MARCH IN FRESNO. SPOKE ABOUT RECENT TRIP TO WASINGTON DC. SPOKE ABOUT GOFUNDME PROJECT FOR HER BOOK.

TREASURER’S REPORT (CAROLE L): 7-31-2016 BALANCES IN TWO ACCOUNTS: $126.86 AND $255.23, TOTAL $382.09.

GUEST SPEAKER: ESTELLA KESSLER. ESTELLA SPOKE ABOUT ATTENDING THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN PHILADELPHIA TO NOMINATE OUR FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT, HILLARY CLINTON. SHE ALSO SPOKE ABOUT OUR PRECINCT CAPTAIN PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN PROVEN TO INCREASE VOTER TURNOUT BY 28.6%.  MIKKI A. WILL TRY TO FIND SOMEONE FOR WEST SIDE, AND ESTELLA WILL ALSO ASK DAREN MILLER FOR SUGGESTIONS.

CHERELLA NICHOLSON WAS INTRODUCED AS CANDIDATE FOR STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT TRUSTEE AREA 2. SHE IS RUNNING AGAINST THE INCUMBENT, ERIC PAYNE, WHO WAS ALSO PRESENT AND SPOKE.

DISCUSSION ABOUT GETTING OUT WEST SIDE VOTERS TO VOTE (GOTV). DISCUSSION ABOUT GROWING CLUB MEMBERSHIP.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: AUGUST 25 NWPC LUNCHEON FEATURING SENATOR BARBARA BOXER.

.RICHARD G. HAS PERFORMANCES COMING UP. HEALTH FAIR TAKING PLACE TOMORROW. NATURALIZATION CEREMONIES ON TUESDAY. LARRY WANTS SOMEONE TO TAKE OVER AS CONTENT MANAGER FOR OUR WEBSITE, AND HE WILL PROVIDE TRAINING.

PRESENT: Mikki Addison, Larry Johnson, Carole Laval, Marcus Crawford, Kathy Omachi, Fannie Hayes, Eric Payne, Michaela Gillespie, Jesse Keys, Magdalena Gomez.

Call to Order: 3:41 pm

By-laws require 8 members for quorum. No quorum.

Introduction of Officers, Members, and Guests. It was reported VP Richard Graham unable to attend due to illness.

Magdalena G. asked for volunteers for Democratic booth at Fresno District Fair, which runs Oct. 5 to Oct. 16. Variety of shifts and dates are available.

President’s Report (Mikki A): Attended Founders Day at African American History Museum earlier today.  Reported that the museum needs volunteers. Kathy O. noted that Mr. Yokomi  of Central Fish donated the original flag poles and flags to the museum.

Treasurer’s Report (Carole L):  8/1 and 8/31 balance in check account unchanged at $126.86. 8/1 balance in savings was $255.23 and 8/31 balance is $255.24, due to interest earned. Total of both accounts is $382.10. There was discussion of options for holding our accounts at other financial institutions. It was noted that these accounts are with WFB and they do not charge us any fees.

Eric Payne spoke about his re-election bid for SCCCD Area 2 Trustee.  Carole L. noted that she serves as treasurer for one of his opponents in this race.

Speaker: Kathy O., Co-Chair of Chinatown Revitalization, Inc, spoke about the Chinatown history, including the tunnel system.  The area was established in the 1860’s. The 2017 annual New Year’s parade will be the 17th time it’s been held, and it grows in size from year to year. It will be on the first Saturday in March.

Larry J. spoke about the website and the need for help with its maintenance and content.

Mikki A. talked about need for help with Clinton phone banks and Westside precinct walking.

Other:

Congratulations to Desiree Taylor, past president Charles Taylor’s wife. She will become a naturalized citizen on October 11. She will immediately register to vote and is excited to be able to vote for our first female president.
